Newlands College offers its gifted and talented students a rich and challenging programme with a range of extension activities. Students are identified by a range of methods including referral by staff, parents and the students themselves. Students participate in competitions including ICAS Science and English, Mathswell and Science Fair. Other opportunities include CREST and activities to develop creative and critical thinking. There are student groups for philosophy, chess and creative writing.

Newlands College acknowledges that this group of students may have particular pastoral needs and the Dean of Gifted and Talented students is able to attend to these.
